Speaking with TVLine, Cheadle reflected on his reaction when he first heard that he would be playing a Skrull Rhodey in Secret Invasion. The actor revealed that “it was a request” rather than a “demand,” explaining that the part he played “was to set up stuff in the following thing.“ However, he seems uncertain whether this story aspect will affect Armor Wars. Check out his comment below:
“Uh… you know, there was no… it wasn’t a demand. It was a request. ‘What do you think about playing this?’ And it was to set up stuff in the following thing. So, if the following thing happens, and all those things were set up, then that’s one thing. If, as you said, it doesn’t, then we can talk about how I feel about it after!”
Nothing Is Set in Stone
It’s almost a certainty that Armor Wars will deal with the shocking revelation in Secret Invasion. However, since the news about Armor Wars switching from being a television series to a movie came out, there has been very little update on its development. Despite the fact that Marvel is moving forward with the project, the film is currently not slated for either Phase 5 or 6. Cheadle’s comment seems to suggest that the plan for Armor Wars is still up in the air.
Now that Robert Downey Jr. will play Doctor Doom in the MCU, it’s possible his return could significantly change one upcoming Marvel project.
What Cheadle said adds some uncertainty to what Armor Wars will be about. It seems that Marvel Studios initially planned to incorporate the Skrull twist into the upcoming film. With Rhodes presumably being a Skrull since Avengers: Civil War, the upcoming conflict in Armor Wars seems self-explanatory. However, in the light of Cheadle’s comment, this might not be the case.
Armor Wars is based on the comic of the same name that explores Tony Stark’s concern about his technology ending up in the wrong hands.
Our Take on Armor Wars
Armor Wars Needs To Address The Skrull Twist
There seems to be a lot of changes around upcoming projects. With the franchise reaching a state of stagnation after Avengers: Endgame, a change of plan might not be the worst thing. The Skrull twist is certainly one of the biggest intrigues of the upcoming project, given that viewers are curious about when Rhodey was abducted and whether a Skrull Rhodey was in his place in major MCU events.
It wouldn’t be the first time the MCU chose not to incorporate a major event in future projects.
On the other hand, if Armor Wars didn’t walk down the path paved by Secret Invasion, the Skrull twist would have gone to waste. It wouldn’t be the first time the MCU chose not to incorporate a major event in future projects. Still, not following through the plan would be a big disappointment.
